For a long time, Veronica and Liz held each other—floating in that other dimension, never wanting to let go of the precious moments that remained. During those moments, Veronica thought about how they had first met in Salem Village. Liz was a schoolteacher and Veronica a midwife. They met along Essex Street in the middle of a cool autumn day with maples ablaze in red and orange. They were walking toward each other when Liz dropped her basket of vegetables (or perhaps was compelled to drop her basket of vegetables) and a potato rolled and stopped at the toe of Veronica’s black-laced boot. They spoke only for a few moments, exchanging the expected greetings and pleasantries typical of that time period. It was 1659 when they fell in love and began their secret rendezvous—three years before the witch trials began and Salem was written into history forever.

And now, as in all the many years past, the evening was fading into morning and Veronica understood how little time remained, even as her heart screamed, “No! I can’t let go of my Liz!” Veronica glanced down at Liz. Liz’s head was resting on Veronica’s shoulder and her eyes were closed, but she wasn’t sleeping. “What are you thinking, darling?”

“That we’re lucky. We somehow keep finding each other. I wonder if others have been so lucky.” Liz’s eyes opened and she smiled, those adorable gray orbs melting into tears. “But I guess others don’t have the powers you have.”

Veronica kissed Liz lightly on the forehead. “Oh, you’d be surprised at the powers others have. Sometimes I find it difficult to keep up with the antics of my friends. But the one thing that I have—and they don’t—is you. And remember, darling, my spells would be meaningless if you didn’t want to be with me as much as I want to be with you.”

“Then we’ll be together again.”

“Always.”

Veronica took Liz by the hands and lifted her from the pillows. “One last kiss to get me through until next year.” Closing her eyes, Veronica used all of her will to hang onto that last moment—to remember Liz’s warm body against her and the beautiful kiss that made her heart race.

“I love you, Veronica.”

“Thank you, darling Liz. I love you, too. Shall we go?”

“Until next year.”

“Next year.”

“You’ll find me?”

“I’ll find you.”

With a nod of her head, Veronica escorted Liz back into that earthly dimension they had left behind earlier that evening. The fog in the room slowly dissipated. And then Veronica cast the final spell that sent the soul of Liz back into the ages until next All Hallow’s Eve. “Good-bye, my love,” she whispered softly. The woman to her right looked dazed.

“Hey, did I fall asleep or something?” Liz asked.

“Must have been the punch,” Veronica said, forcing a smile to her face. “They make a wicked punch here in the old mansion.”

“Gosh, I can usually hold my liquor pretty well,” Liz mused. “But I don’t remember a damned thing about the party. Did we have fun?”

“Depends on your point of view, I guess.
